Hear electroacoustic music for this New Sounds from Australian-born British-based composer/keyboardist Leah Kardos, Irish-born Princeton-based composer Donnacha Dennehy writing for the American violist Nadia Sirota, new music from the Canadian chamber band Esmerine, and music from Norway.
Drawing on the wit and ornamental delicacy of the Rococo period, (or "Late Baroque"), composer Leah Kardos plays with patterns as well as the spatial possibilities of the Visconti studio in London on her latest record Rococochet. Her keyboards might include piano, along with percussion - vibes, marimba, glocks and bells, but also an array of analogue instruments and technologies like the CP40, MiniMoog, Moog Sub37 and Mellotron.
Then, listen to an acoustic baroque instrument, viola da gamba, paired with modern technology layered with the bowed string instrument, the viola in "Tessellatum" by Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy. Written for New York-based violist Nadia Sirota, the long-form work consists of some 15 layers of acoustic bowed string instrument patterns, in three parts; we’ll hear Part 3. The viola da gamba layers are played by Liam Byrne.
Hear brand new music from the chamber band Esmerine, co-founded by former Thee Silver Mt. Zion member Rebecca Foon and Godspeed You! Black Emperor alumnus Bruce Cawdron. Listen to “Northeast Kingdom” from their forthcoming 2017 record, Mechanics Of Dominion, which centers around mallet instruments (marimba, glockenspiel, piano and amplified music box) in addition to Becky Foon’s cello and layers of three violins, along with bass.
Plus, listen to music from Norway, by Erland Apneseth Trio. Apneseth plays the Hardanger fiddle – a traditional folk instrument, and along with guitarist Stephan Meidell, drummer Øyvind Hegg-Lunde, (plus live sampling and electronics), the trio majestically crosses into to jazz, folk, and improv territory.
